TECHNOLOGY REVIEW CLASS OF 1963 NOTES AUGUST/SEPTEMBER, 1994 ISSUE
(Sent May 20, 1994)
Three Class of 1963 Scholars have been announced.
Sumer S. Johal, a junior from Austin, Texas, is in two UROP programs; one
in electromagnetic field theory and the other in aircraft vision systems.
He teaches, choreographs, and performs in MIT's North Indian Folk Dance
Club. Feikay Sheu is an EE senior from San Marino, California who has a
UROP in MIT's Microsystems Technology Lab. He is a founding member of MIT's
Association of Taiwanese Students. Jonora K. Jones, a sophomore from Houston,
Texas, is studying chemical engineering. She co-chairs the National Society
of Black Engineers. *Dr. Larry Krakauer, VI, wrote, enclosing Jonora's
thank you letter to our class. As he says, it's good to see a tangible
result of our giving. He also noted that his job as president is everything
former president *Pete Van Aken, XV, promised it would be, (that's
an inside president joke; hint: what have you seen him do lately?), but
wait till he has to organize our next reunion!
*Shingo Nishikawa, VI-A, wrote saying
he oversees a business unit for AT&T in the Asia-Pacific region. He
is struck by the high energy level and confidence of people there which
he feels are missing in Europe and the States. He mentioned Singapore's
super clean airport and how safe it is to walk around there. I found this
interesting in light of the recent caning episode. He likes to travel in
the Himalayan foot hills, Tibet, and western China and is looking to make
business for AT&T there. (I can see it now: the Tibetan Dial-a-Lama).
*Dr. Mike Maul, VI, also works for
AT&T, managing international IC design centers. Since there are centers
in Tokyo, Singapore, Taiwan, Munich, London, and Madrid, he does a lot
of traveling. Mike likes long distance horseback riding and had just done
some in Australia. (Mike, save Larry a call, you know how busy he is, and
you call Shingo and tell him you'll meet him at our next reunion!).
*Dr. Elliott Bird, XXI-B, enjoyed the
last reunion and is already looking forward to our 35th! (Larry, you have
three to four years to seize upon this opportunity!) Elliott says he enjoys
the recent chuckles in this column, but mathematicians have always had
a strange sense of humor.
Received word that *Dr. Daniel Rie,
VI, was promoted to Senior Vice President of Colonial Management Associates.
*William C. Zoller, VI-A, wrote to say he got together with his
fraternity brother Dave Snider, who is a professor of mathematics at University
of South Florida. William didn't give any clues as to what he himself has
been doing. They hadn't seen each other for 30 years. (Larry, tell him
he can see a lot of people he hasn't seen in 35 years at the next reunion.
That's two calls now in the three years before the rush starts. You can
do it, Larry!). *Steve Ditmeyer, XV, and his family moved from Kansas
City to Boise, where he joined Morrison Knudsen Corporation as vice president
of marketing and business development for their locomotive division. As
to Boise, Steve says that as most newcomers do, they concluded the city
got too big the day after they moved in. Steve saw classmate *John Wasserlein,
II, and dorm-mate Martin Thomas '65, who are now longtime Boiseans.
Finally, *Phil Marcus, VI, who for
ten years wrote this column, sent some news of his own. (I knew he couldn't
stay away; it's in his blood). He was at the 'tute in May to play proud
papa as his son Gary officially got his Ph.D. in Cognitive Science. (He
actually successfully defended his thesis the day before our 30th reunion).
Phil was doing work for a local HMO as a programmer/analyst in addition
to his freelance work. His most interesting project is a windows-based
cost estimating program for the apparel manufacturing industry. He is also
doing travel training: PC configuration engineering, mostly for tech support
personnel. Phil, knowing how he conned me into this position, asked how
I like it so far. The truth is, at the end of my first year, it's a little
more work than Larry has had to do, but I love it.
Keep the alumnews coming! Try to get it to
