CLASS OF '57 NOTES FOR SEP-OCT 2000 TECH REVIEW
From Alan M. May
George Borrmann writes 'After more than 30 years of designing nuclear power plants for the Navy at GE's Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) in Schenectady NY, I was presented with an option for early retirement in 1991. Initially very uninterested, I eventually decided that I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a change in lifestyle. I retired, moved to Louisville KY, and got married to a native Kentuckian whom I'd known for several years. After almost 8 years, I'm very happy with the result, although I do miss exercising my engineering skills.'
Don Aucamp writes that he is starting to take up golf and enjoys tennis, reading, and studying the stock market. Don is President of Market Research Associates, Inc. His wife Carol was elected to the St Louis 100 athletes of the century. Carol recently had an article written about her in the St. Louis Post Dispatch concerning her work at the Alison Aucamp Outreach Center. Don says that he visited Tony Ryan in Naples, FL. Don reports that Tony and his wife Leslie are doing great and are currently building a magnificent home on the beachfront in Naples.
Mort Rosenstein writes from Marblehead MA where he is retired. Mort was president of his own company Atlantic Computer Center. Mort recently purchased a vacation home deep in the New Hampshire woods (Lisbon NH). Mort enjoys painting (pastels) fixing up the houses and travel in Hawaii and New England. Mort attended MIT's graduation last year when his son received an MBA from the Sloan School. Hank, please take note: Mort is looking forward to working on the 2002 reunion.
Alex Bernhard writes from Boston where he is a partner in the law firm of Hale and Dorr that he and Myra enjoy the tranquility of their New Hampshire farm where they can watch the grass grow. Last year they took a four-day bike tour along the East shore of Lake Champlain.
One classmate who has got it all together is Danny Borenstein who this year has been elected President of the American Psychiatric Association.
Andrew Viterbi who is Vice Chairman of Qualcomm was recently elected to the Technical Advisory Board of TechOnline Inc.
John Varela writes from McLean VA where he and Carol have retired after John spent 35 years with Mitre Corp. They visited Italy last fall. John is organizing golf tournaments. They have three sons, two granddaughters and by the time you read this a third grandchild should have arrived.
Richard Schwaegler writes from Seattle where he is currently in his 41st year of teaching at Seattle University. Richard received the 1999 Engineering Educator of the Year award from the Puget Sound Engineering Council. Richard says he loves skiing, water skiing, bicycling, handball and spending time with his still growing family, six children and twelve grandchildren, all in close proximity.
Twelve grandchildren sounded like a lot until Norman Heathorn wrote from Danville Ca where he is Chairman of the Board of N.V. Heathorn Inc. mechanical and general contractors. Norman and Dolores just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a cruise around Cape Horn. They have fifteen grandchildren! Norman assists his son Ted who is the third generation to run the family business in San Leandro. Norman's son Tom owns a mechanical service and construction business in Oakland CA. Norman's daughter Susan's husband manages a mechanical construction operation in Portland OR and Norman's son David is a Lieutenant in the Navy who will join Ted 'in the family business' in three years.
A guy with his eye on the movers and shakers is Richard Hess who writes from Palos Verdes CA where he and his wife Suzanne live that he is a Principal and Structural Engineer with Hess Engineering Inc. Richard's interests are family, earthquake engineering and travel. Richard and Suzanne recently returned from the World Conference on Earthquake Engineering in Auckland NZ where they also attended the wedding of Suzanne's niece.
The Institute informs me that Ryan Severin Class of '03 (that's 2003 guys, not 1903!) of Lancaster NY has been selected as the Class of 1957 Scholar for 1999-2000. Ryan is an award-winning pianist who plays soccer and studies astronomy. Ryan plans to major in aeronautical and astronautical engineering at MIT; and fellows, that is where your scholarship bucks are going.
The Institute also tells me that Jay Bonnar passed away this past January. Jay received his MS from the Sloan School in 1962 and was a consultant living in W. Roxbury.
