Nelson Disco, Ron Keefe, Bill Noz, Marty Zombeck, Art Bergles and Cynthia Morris of the MIT Alumni Association met in Boston on Friday, July 11, to discuss things of importance to the Class of '57. We reviewed the correspondence (April 15) received from the Alumni Office summarizing FY03 Class giving through 3/31/03. Question was raised as to where total (for all years) class giving is summarized. Art Bergles indicated that totals are given in the "MIT Alumni Association Annual Report, 2001-2002." The Class of 1957 ranks SECOND among all classes in terms of total giving to the Campaign for MIT, thanks to the major donations from Ray and Maria Stata. They also made it possible for our class to have the largest reunion gift ever (up to 1997). Amounts provided for the Class Professorship and for student scholarships were also reviewed. The hope was expressed that the officers might met with Professor Fernandez at some point in the future. The Class Scholars dinner held on May 7 at the Institute was attended by Bill Noz and Ron Keefe on behalf of the Class of '57. Unfortunately, the set up was not well arranged for a meeting between the Class of '57 sponsored scholars and our representatives. This information was given to Cynthia Morris, hopefully to improve the system in the future. Cynthia Morris reminded us of the Alumni Leadership Conference being scheduled for September 19 and 20 at the Institute, and provided copies of a handout of the planned program. It was agreed that all Class of '57 officers should plan to attend as this can provide important help for planning our 50th Reunion. There was a brief discussion of a possible 47.5 year Reunion. It was felt by the officers present that we should allow and encourage such a reunion if there were people willing to lead and organize the affair, but we should continue to focus our energies on planning for the 50th. There was considerable discussion of planning for the 50th Reunion. Cynthia Morris provided a "straw" schedule of events, and several planning documents for how to go about planning reunions, as well as statistics and data regarding Class of '57 participation and attendance at similar MIT Reunions by other classes. There was discussion as to whether "the big event" should be before or after the events on the MIT campus. It was agreed that Art Bergles would prepare a questionnaire letter to be sent to all alumni to get feedback and ideas for the venue and timing of the 50th events. Art and Bill Salmon have already been looking at hotels in Chatham, MA, (Chatham Bars Inn) which they feel would be an ideal location for the off-campus portion of the Reunion. The class Web site is averaging about 1.5 "hits" per day. It was suggested that we post our "missing classmate" list on the web site in the hope that someone out there will recognize and provide a missing contact address. Addresses are missing for 136 of 654 active alumni, according to Alumni Office Records. Ron reported that our class treasury has a current balance of $5546. The officers were all sorry to learn the Cynthia Morris of the Alumni Association, who has been very helpful to date in beginning our 50th Reunion planning, will be leaving her position at MIT and relocating to New Zealand with her husband. Her successor has not yet been named. The Following Action Items were agreed: N. Disco will contact Professor Fernandez and will also provide some biography data about him to Marty Zombeck to include on our Web Site. N. Disco will contact Dave Clunies regarding a 47.5 reunion C. Morris will forward sample reunion questionnaires to Nelson for reference, and find out about assistance posting a survey on the class web site. N. Disco will provide a draft outline, and Art Bergles will generate and send a questionnaire letter to all classmates about preferences and desires for the 50th Reunion. Marty Zombeck will arrange to get a "missing classmates" list linked to our web site. Bill Noz will develop a suggested work plan for class officers for 2003/2004. N. Disco will contact Jack Safirstein about adding Class web site address to class notes. C. Morris will provide N. Disco with a copy of the 2004 reunion planning book. C. Morris will forward contact information for previous 50th reunion chairs for reference. C. Morris will forward a listing of recent "resorts" that classes have contracted for reunion activities. C.Morris will have updated "missing classmates" list forwarded to Marty Zombeck and will have Alumni Association staff contact Marty for class email list tutorial. C. Morris will email a "straw" copy of the 2007 reunion schedule to Marty to post on the website. All officers will plan to attend the Alumni Leadership Conference on September 19 and 20. Another officers meeting will be scheduled at the Institute sometime during that Conference. Nelson Disco
