CLASS OF '57 NOTES FOR MAY-JUN 1998 TECH REVIEW
From Alan M. May
Suggestions have been pouring in as to where to hold the 42.5th reunion. Ed
Roberts writes: "pick a good date, a warm spot, and we're there." Ed is
working just as hard as ever as a Professor at MIT's Sloan School. Ed and
Nancy have five grandchildren "so far." Vic Klemans writes suggesting a
"weekend in Washington DC." Vic is a Professor of Marine Studies and
Director of the Center for Remote Sensing at the University of Delaware. In
addition to his professional interests Vic is spending his time on the
exploration of ancient cultures. Gerry Saul writes that we should gather in
"sandals in Jamaica (an all-inclusive resort) in the wintertime." Gerry is
retired from doing research for Procter & Gamble and is living the good life
with Ann in the mountains and sunshine of Colorado. John Best writes that we
should spend "a weekend at a resort - golf and tennis - maybe a spa." Of
course John, when he isn't working at Best Associates or spending time with
his wife Estelle, their family including four grandchildren, or fire
fighting, plays lots of golf and tennis. Donald Aucamp writes: "I loved
seeing Boston again at the last reunion. Also Maine was likewise terrific."
Don retired as a Professor at Southern Illinois University in 1994 but is
currently President of Market Research Associates. Don divides his time
between stock market analysis and tennis. As to where to hold the reunion
Hank Salzhauer writes: "The great Gary knows all!" Speaking of Dischel, Gary
says that several classmates from California have suggested a western
location. Gary asks what would you think of a western reunion for the
42.5th? Perhaps Tahoe or Vegas or somewhere in California? Please let me
know your thoughts on this?
John de Verrier's son, Jerome de Verrier, writes to Tom Springall at MIT: "
I was searching the Internet under my last name and stumbled on my father's
name in your list of missing classmates for the MIT Class of 1957. In fact
my father's real name is Jean-Claude de Verrier - he must have used John to
make life a little easier. Unfortunately, he died on May 25, 1979. He was
one of the approximately 274 passengers who died while flying a DC-10 which
crashed in Chicago. Of course, he is sadly missed. He married my mother,
Marguerite, in 1962 and had two children, Ariane and myself, and lived in
the Boston area. In 1970, our family moved to New Zealand and he took a job
as a consultant for a computer software company there. We moved back to
California in 1978. Did you know my father personally? Or do you know
someone who knew him? I would love to hear from one of his classmates to
learn more about my father. Writing to you brought back a lot of memories.
Jerome de Verrier" If you wish to contact Jerome, please send your letter to
me and I will see that it is forwarded to him. ---*Alan M. May, secretary,
