CLASS OF '57 NOTES FOR MAY-JUN 2001 TECH REVIEW

From Alan M. May

Michael Galumbeck writes that he retired in 1997 as President of ReGain Inc. a company, owned by the Calvert Funds, that develops durable medical products. Michael and Peggy have been married 34 years and have a wonderful son and daughter, both highly successful. Michael says that it is his good fortune with his children that has inspired him, in retirement, to work with other children. Michael is now a substitute elementary school teacher for the Albemarle County School System teaching all subjects and all grades. Michael is currently serving a three-year term on a newly created committee for “Equity & Diversity” which seeks to prepare children to thrive in our new global economy.

Richard McCabe writes that he retired from Boeing in 1994, earned his PhD in 1998 and has become an adjunct instructor at Pepperdine University, both in the school of business and the school of education. Richard and Mary Ann are proudest of their children. They have three sons: Michael an attorney, Matthew a philosopher, and John a consultant. Their daughter Ann is a travel consultant.

Richard Johnson writes “After 42 years in the aerospace industry, I retired from Boeing on April 28, 2000 (32 of those years with Boeing). I am grateful for having worked with some fine colleagues on just about every type of aerospace system. Now I’m looking forward to a new career in more direct Christian service in the years ahead.”

John Crews wrote (many moons ago) that he retired in 1993 as CFO of a San Francisco law firm. John and Liz moved from Palo Alto to Santa Fe, built a house that is now their home, and “settled in to enjoy the beauty and friendliness of this delightful part of the country.” John has been active with the MIT Club of New Mexico, his Rotary Club and church. And, I believe that last year they became grandparents.

Stewart Crawford writes “I'm still active in the business world - own a company publishing ocean shipping rates on our web page, after spending 20+ years in the corporate with my own "turnaround" management consulting firm in the Los Angeles area. My wife of 36 years died in 1993 and I am now remarried to a lovely lady originally from Panama. I have a small collection of classic vehicles including a Pierce-Arrow, two Hudsons, a Cadillac, a rare Diamond T pickup and a Mack - their year’s range from 1935 to 1958. With the exception of one of the Hudsons, they are all "drivers" and I take them out for occasional spins, but, regrettably, it's time to start simplifying my life and some will have to go in the next year or so. I try to spend a few weeks every year in my hometown of Keene Valley NY where I have a small cottage and still many friends from my boyhood these many years ago. My older daughter is an associate director with NBC studios in Burbank, after working as a production person on the Johnny Carson and Jay Leno shows for many years; my other daughter is in TV hustings with ITT, Bell Helicopter, Raytheon, etc. and then 15 years sports production in San Francisco. My three grandchildren are all here in Southern CA and are a joy - whose aren't?”

Ernest Wasserman writes from Brooklyn that he retired last September as President of Stavenhagens Co., Inc., a company founded by his great-grandmother in 1878. In my birthday greetings I always ask classmates about recent traffic violations. Ernie replied ‘speeding - they never called me “speedy”!’

Bill Brandon writes that he is a Principal Engineer with MITRE Corp. in satellite communications. Bill was an AIAA Fellow in 1995 and is an IEEE Sr. Member. Bill has a second family of two boys (ages 12 & 13) and, thus, is active in soccer and basketball. Bill and Sally live in Concord, MA.

Darrell Briggs writes: “I am with Compaq Computer Corp. in the Alpha Development Group in Shrewsbury/Marlboro, MA. I started with Digital in July 1979 and survived, first the acquisition of Digital semiconductor by Intel and finally the acquisition and merger into Compaq. I am a senior member of the Technical Staff. I do a little bit of everything on the chip packaging and systems design end of things, primarily in an Advanced Development, Disruptive Technology, and visionary end of things. What is wrong with this picture --- I am a 65 year old trying to convince the 25-45 year olds that they should stop being tree-hugging traditionalists? If I can continue to have fun and not overstay my welcome I plan to hang around for another 4-5 years.” Darrell adds: “about a month before my 52nd birthday I became a certified Scuba Diver. I advanced up the certification ranks to become a PADI Master Scuba Diver. I have logged about 750 dives in the past 13 years. These dives are divided among Live-a-Board dives in the Caribbean and cold-water dives during the summer off Cape Ann here in MA. My summer diving keeps us in lobsters. This past summer I caught about 55. Earlier on when my son (now 36) and daughter (now 37) were growing up, I was a soccer coach and administrator. I coached the girls U-19 State Select Team for about 13 years; I was President of the State Youth Soccer Association for 6 ½ years; and Treasurer of the United States Youth Soccer Association for 4 ½ years.”

Amarjit Chopra writes that his latest book is entitled “Managing the People Side of Innovation.” Richard Hess writes that his son Craig, an architect, is getting married in June. Richard is President of Hess Engineering, a nine person structural engineering firm.

Class of 1957 contributions to the Scholarship Fund have been such that this year we are supporting two students for 2000-2001: one is a sophomore whom we sponsored last year as well; the other is an incoming freshman.

Jules Byron, of blessed memory, passed away in 1992. One of Jules favorite expressions was “You can take the boy out of the Bronx, but you can’t take the Bronx out of the boy.” And, whenever he was particularly enjoying life, he liked to boast: “Pretty good for a kid from the Bronx.” Now, a Fund has been established in Jules’ memory to help Bronx kids going to MIT. The Bronx Science Alumni Association is administering it. If you are interested in contributing to this fund please contact Elaine Byron at 516-877-1411.
