CLASS OF '57 NOTES FOR JAN-FEB 1999 TECH REVIEW

From Alan M. May

Well, it's official. The 42.5th Reunion (otherwise known as the 1999 Reunion) will be held June 27th to June 30th (Sunday to Wednesday) at the Carmel Valley Ranch in Carmel, CA. Located on the sunny side of the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel Valley Ranch features 1700 acres of California countryside, 100 guest suites, swimming, tennis, horseback riding, and championship golf. Accommodations for the reunion are all suites at 50% off the regular rate or $250 per night plus tax (single or double occupancy - it makes no difference). Make your reservations now by calling 1-800-422-7635. Be sure to mention the MIT Class of 1957 Reunion. Carmel Valley Ranch evokes a world of extraordinary natural beauty. This 1,700 acre estate is set against the rugged hills of the Monterey Peninsula, just a few minutes from the beaches and galleries of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Each of the 100 guest suites has been decorated to offer lavish comfort with homelike amenities. These include two televisions, three telephones, a wood burning fireplace and an oversized deck with great vistas. Recreational facilities abound including Pete Dyer's 18-hole championship golf course, 13 tennis courts, pools and spas, a fitness center and horseback riding. At Carmel Valley you'll see your classmates and, as the promotional literature says, "discover the true romance of a ranch". Martin Zombeck has set up a special page on the Internet for our 1999 reunion. For more details and to see what the ranch and its facilities really look like go to http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1957/99reunion.html on the Internet. When you have made your reservation at Carmel Valley, please contact Gary Dischel and let him know you are coming. You can e-mail Gary at garioski@aol.com or telephone him at home at 508-881-4145. Gary has arranged for a cocktail party Sunday evening, so plan to arrive early. How do you get there you ask? Carmel Valley Ranch is 50 miles from the San Jose Airport or about twenty minutes from the Monterey airport.

Sid Borison sent an e-mail (last August): I have worked for MIT Lincoln Laboratory since 1962 (after one year as an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of Washington). My work has been in the general area of Missile Defense. Although I have not given much thought to retirement, it is coming soon. As such, the lab asked me to run the effort we have in DC supporting the Ballistic Missile Defense Office. So we packed up and moved down to the DC area for at least two years---thinking that we would retire to Cleveland, OH. Why Cleveland? Because two of our four married children live there. One lives in Palo Alto, CA, and the fourth lives in Israel. Between the four we currently have nine grandchildren (five in Cleveland) with two more expected within the next two months. We spend most of our travel time going to see the kids and grandchildren (my wife Bernice even more than me). Sometimes, while on the way, we take in other sites; e.g., a week in Amsterdam, a week in London, the California Coast, etc. Next month, we celebrate our 41st wedding anniversary. Hopefully, we will take a trip to Italy next spring---we had planned it last year for the 40th.

Thomas Goldstick sent a fax from the Chemical Engineering Department at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL where he and his wife Marcia live. Tom says that he will retire at the end of August 1999 at age 65 and that his main interest will be "doing nothing".

Robert Lawrence writes that he is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Robert's main interests are rugby, wine and his wife Carol. When queried for an interesting story he replied: "ask Ed Hasselman what happened after the Tufts Lacrosse game in 1954". Okay Ed, what happened?

Ira Holtzman writes that he and his wife Margot live in Bedford, MA. Ira retired as a Lead Engineer with Mitre Corp in October 1997. Ira’s main interests are walking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, reading, traveling, and visiting with his two children. That sounds like the good life to me. --- Alan M.
