One classmate wrote Gary Dischel as follows:
"For me the highlight of the reunion" (last June)
"was not the splendid cocktail party held on the beautiful
veranda of the Carmel Valley Ranch. Nor was it the glorious setting
with the fabulous views. Nor was it reminiscing with old classmates.
Nor was it the deer wandering through the property. Nor was it
the nostalgic barbecue and campfire. No, for me the highlight
of the reunion was its best-kept secret! Meeting your beautiful
and intelligent daughter Jennifer was for me the highlight of
the reunion! What a marvelous young lady you have! And if holding
a reunion in California got her off Okinawa, why that is so much
the better." Gary's daughter "J.J." is a doctor
and Air Force officer stationed on Okinawa who took advantage
of the reunion to reunite with her dad. Gary organized a great
extended weekend aided and abetted by Ron Keefe (finances),
Martin Zombeck (web-page promotion) and Hank Salzhauer,
Jack Safirstein and Bob Gal (general talk-it-up).
Darrell Fowler organized the golf tournament (the Rats
versus the Beavers - the Rats won) as well as the excursion to
the Monterey aquarium (world-class). Gentlemen, many thanks to
you all for a great time! Among the other classmates in attendance
were Don Aucamp, Bruce Blanchard, Dick Brandes,
Mike Brenner, Phil Cammack, Harry Flagg,
Bruce Grover, Ed Hasselmann, Jay Hyman, Mal
Jones, Jim Schattinger, Don Weller, Elliot
Wolk and David Wolsk together with numerous spouses,
kids and significant others. While there I visited with a local
friend who invited me to the Pebble Beach Golf Club for lunch.
The Pebble Beach greens fee is presumably a steal at only $330.00
per person per round (I say that it is a steal because the new
owners of the club are reported to be planning to raise the greens
fee to $500.00 per person per round!). Well, I suppose that it
does give one something to look forward to.
Immediately after the reunion Gary celebrated his
retirement as reunion chairman by mis-stepping off his boat back
in Boston and breaking his leg. Captain Ahab says that he has
vowed to return to sea just as soon as he can manage to get back
on his boat again.
Virginia Thelin writes
that she retired from Chung Hsing University in Taiwan last September
to pursue her long-time interest in archaeology. Virginia is now
living in Durham England.
MIT reports to me the passing of Stanley W. Wand
of Roslyn Hills NY who died on December 23, 1998. Stanley was
the (retired) President of Continental Instruments Corp. His wife
Zenia survives him. Stanley majored in Mechanical Engineering
and lived in Baker House.
