October 2009 Class Notes

We received the following note a few weeks ago:
Hi Joe!
My name is Mary Clare Byrne Darland. My dad was Barney Byrne. I was on the internet trying to find any history on my dad and your notes came up about the reunion. My dad will be dead 30 years this Thursday, September 24. I was out in Cambridge last year with my family and visited MIT. Fond memories of visiting with my dad from childhood. Dad was from Omaha and moved to St. Louis after college and married my mom. We stayed in St. Louis and that is where I am today. I hope this e-mail finds you well and please forward anything from MIT baseball that you have. My brothers and I cherish anything from my dad as we were young when he died...I was 13 and my younger brother was 9.
Take care and thanks!

After some research, we replied as follows:

Hi Mary Clare
I'll put your note in our October 2009 Class Notes.
I have attached a few files that were used in preparing some previous Class Notes. There is also a file that shows a couple of spring 1950 articles from TheTech, our student newspaper. Most of the material found its way into the November 2007 notes at:
http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1950/class_notes_posted_Nov_07.shtml
and the April 2008 notes at:
http://alumweb.mit.edu/classes/1950/class_notes_posted_Apr_08.shtml
Our yearbook, called Technique, has your father's graduation picture and also a photo of the 1949 baseball team. Do you have it? If not, let me know and I'll send you a copy of the material that pertains to your dad.

Joe and Tom are sure that Mary Clare would like very much to hear from any us who can share recollections of Barney.

Tom, here's a scan of a pic just sent to us by Nan Berninger, Ed's daughter who lives in California.
She stayed with Ed for a month this summer following her mother's death and we had the opportunity to meet her while enjoying great oysters and steamers at a local restaurant.
I'm happy to report that Ed is slowly returning to his normal level of activities and interests.
He's in the process of selling his house in Short Hills, NJ and plans to eventually live with his other daughter and her family in upstate New York when he isn't on Sanibel Island, FL.

60th Reunion

Our 60th Reunion Committee, headed up by Mal Green and Karl Ahlstrand, is hard at work with plans and arrangements for June 2010. We remind you to check out the latest news on our Class Website.
