We have been notified that Kenneth G. Phillips passed away in June 1985, in Silver Spring, MD. There is no other information available at this time. Perhaps some of you who knew him would be willing to share some of your recollections.
Last month we told you about the stirring rendition of "Take Me Back to Tech" by Yardley Chittick '22 , 107 years young, at the June reunion festivities. This month it is our sad task to report to you of Mr. Chittick's passing on July 18, 2008 in Concord, NH. At the time of his death, he was MIT's oldest living graduate. He is survived by his son, our classmate Charles Y. Chittick Jr, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In this month's civil engineering newsletter, the following item appeared:
In the process of removing boxes of professional journals from his house, "PETE" PETROFSKY generously donated dozens of Western Construction magazines between 1929-to-1952 to the MIT Museum.
He also sent several issues of the ASCE CIVIL Engineering magazine from 1946 to the CEE newsletter office, where they serve as a reminder of past accomplishments and visual examples of how the profession's demographics have changed. Many 1946 ads stress how it's finally time to compensate for the wartime neglect of roads and structures by busily resurfacing, repainting and renovating.
We call to your attention the recent issue of Tech Connection at https://alum.mit.edu/ne/noteworthy/enews/07-08-tc.html. There are exciting things going on at the Institute, particularly with respect to fighting against some our most feared diseases. Read about Institute Professor Robert Langer ScD '74, who runs the largest biomedical engineering lab in the world at MIT, and see videos of several talks at the 2008 Summer Symposium on Nanotechnology and Cancer.
We are pleased to report on the status of the Class of 1950 Fund. As of the end of May 2008:
| Book value | $ | 3,915,616 |
| Market value | $ | 21,318,307 |
| Fiscal Year 2008 income | $ | 832,548 |

To All:
July 27, 2008
Jinny & I rejoice in the news that Ari was born this afternoon to granddaughter, Tegan and her husband, Kevin. (5:10 P.M., 5 lb 12 oz.).All are doing well. This great news certainly brightens a rainy afternoon! With Liam in Hawaii and Ari in Florida, I guess the tropics are fertile grounds for family expansion.
CONGRATULATIONS, TEGAN & KEVIN! We're VERY proud of you!! Our best to little Ari. Give him a kiss for us. May he have a happy, healthy, long and wonderful life! |
