Self-effacing we are, not given to braggadocio, but we are proud of our Class Project: The Class of 1950 Student Aid Fund. It supports direct scholarship grants to MIT legacy students, those whose parents or grandparents are MIT alums. The Class Project came about partially in appreciation of the GI Bill, whose benefits helped many of us get our education in the days just after WWII. Our scholarship program has been under way since 1975, founded with our gift to MIT on the occasion of our twenty-fifth reunion.
With accumulated gifts thereto and appreciation of our Fund's share of MIT's endowment, the Fund totaled just over $20,000,000 in June 2008 and has generated over $9,000,000 in financial aid during its 33 year life.
It is by far the largest financial aid class fund at MIT, and has served as a model for other classes who have established scholarship funds as their major class projects. For more information on the Class of 1950 Financial Aid Fund, please contact Bob Garvin at rvgarvin@alum.mit.edu.
