I am delighted to report the Class of 1938 Scholarship Fund awardees for 2001/2002. Six students have been supported by our class in the past; the other three students are first-time recipients of support from the Class of 1938.

You might remember Wesley Acosta, Melissa Mihelidakis, David Milovich, Atanas Pavlov, Joshua Tasoff, and ShuChyng You, who will continue as class scholars. The new Class of 1938 scholars are Victor Castanon, Christopher Possinger, and Evangeline Tzatzalos.

Victor Castanon ‘05 comes to MIT from Homer Hanna High School in Brownsville, Texas having graduated this spring. His interests center around music and computers. He was his high school senior class treasurer, a member of the National Honor Society and a competitor in the interscholastic math league. He was on the staffs of both the newspaper and the yearbook. Victor notes that he worked this summer and plans to study electrical engineering.

Christopher Possinger ’05 graduated in June from Ralston High School in Ralston, Nebraska where he was president of the math club and a member of the National Honor Society. He competed with the school’s academic decathlon squad. His interests include science, math, computers, reading, music and movies. His long-term interest is research.

Evangeline Tzatzalos ’05 is a graduate from Ocean Township High School in Oakhurst, New Jersey, where she was president of both the science and math clubs. A talented musician, she played in the marching band and the concert band, as well as the pit band for musical productions. She has held offices in the French Club and is a student member of the New Jersey Academy of Science. Evangeline plans to pursue a career in biomedical engineering.

As you know, support from the Class of 1938 helps MIT maintain its commitment to admitting the best and brightest, regardless of need. On behalf of the Alumni Association and the Institute, I send sincere thanks for the Class of 1938’s contributions to this fund.
