I am delighted to report the Class of 1938 Beta Theta Pi Scholarship Fund awardees for 2001/2002. Julio Payan ’02 of Austin, Texas and Jeffrey LeBlanc ’03 of Acton, Massachusetts have been chosen as new BTP scholars. Jeffrey LeBlanc ’03, who is majoring in mathematics, presently serves as treasurer of Beta Theta Pi, having been a member since his freshman year. He has done research through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program in both the ocean engineering and mathematics departments. Jeff has been involved in the freshman arts program as the visual arts coordinator. He lists poetry, world affairs, hiking and backpacking among his interests. Jeff plans to earn a Ph.D. and do research in mathematics and architecture Julio Payan ’02, who is majoring in mechanical engineering, is a member of Beta Theta Pi. His interests include the varsity swimming team (he is also a diver) and the outdoors, where he is a rock climber and enjoys camping, hiking and running. Julio has been a member of the MIT Snowboarding Club, as well. Julio spent last summer at an Engineering internship at Fleetwood Industries in Reading, PA, and plans to acquire his Master’s Degree and become a mechanical engineer. As you know, support from the fraternity’s alumni helps MIT maintain its commitment to admitting the best and brightest, regardless of need. On behalf of the Alumni Association and the Institute, I send sincere thanks for the Beta Theta Pi alumni contributions to this fund. |
