1997-1998
It is with
pleasure that I write to announce the recipients of funding from the Class
of 1933 Kimball Scholarship for the 1997-98 academic year. While all scholarship
recipients are outstanding students, the following details tell you a
little bit about the students, both of whom are new recipients of funding
this year. If you would like more information, please don’t hesitate
to contact me.
Maitreya
Dunham, a junior biology major from Dickson, Tennessee. She is
planning to attend graduate school and is hoping for a career as a research
scientist. Maitreya has already held a very time-consuming Undergraduate
Research Opportunities Project (UROP) job in the Biology Department. Her
other commitments include working at the Adaptive Technology Lab, creating
web pages, participating on the Speech Team, and playing in the Concert
Band. She also spends about 10 hours each week working as the editor-in-chief
of Counterpoint Magazine.
Thomas
Sylla, a sophomore from Elmwood, Wisconsin has just selected
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as his major and he’s
not sure what he’d like to do after getting his degree. Right now,
he’s very interested in Media Lab projects, and has had a UROP there
working with the News in the Future research group. Thomas is a member
of the MIT football team, and in his free time he enjoys woodworking.
Without
the support of your classmates, MIT could not maintain its commitment
to admitting the best and brightest students, regardless of need. With
tuition fees growing and federal student assistance dollars ever shrinking,
scholarships are more important than ever to delivering education of the
highest standard. On behalf of the Alumni/ae Association and the Institute,
I send sincere thanks for your contributions to this fund.
