Class of 1933 Scholarship Fund Awardees

2000-2001

I am delighted to inform you that four students have been selected to receive support from the Class of 1933 for academic year 2000-2001. The Class of 1933 Scholarship Fund support two students. It gives me great pleasure to write and tell you a little bit about their activities.

Federico Gutierrez ’02 of El Paso, Texas, who is a mechanical engineering major, received support from your class last year. Federico entered his third year this fall with an excellent academic record and a busy array of activities: he is a member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the Mexican American Engineers and Scientists organization. He also is part of La Union Chicano por Atzlan, a group dedicated to providing both cultural and academic support to students who identify in any way with Mexican American culture. He continues to work with the Visual Archives Department developing a web site for the Aga Khan Project. Over the summer, he held another internship with the Ford Motor Company. He looks forward to pursuing a career in mechanical engineering.

Daniel Nunes ’04 of Saint Clair Shore, Michigan, is a first-time recipient of support from the Class of 1933. Daniel comes to MIT from De la Salle Collegiate High School. He was a member of the school’s State Championship Science Olympiad team and won several individual medals. He also was a member of the National Honor Society and invested time in web page design, including one for his school. Very involved with his church, he served as coordinator of the music ministry. This past summer, he enjoyed participating in the MIT Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science Program (MITES) and Band Camp. A member of Pi Lambda Phi, Daniel plans to major in electrical engineering and computer science.

As you know, support from the Class of 1933 helps MIT maintain its commitment to admitting the best and brightest, regardless of need. On behalf of the Alumni Association and the Institute, I send sincere thanks for the Class of 1933’s contributions to these funds.
